DVD MANUFACTURING: JEWEL BOX

Black and clear trays

A black, white or colored tray means you can't see anything underneath where your DVD sits, and you can't see through the spine, so your trayliner is only printed on one side.

A clear tray shows the space behind the DVD, and through the spine on the front, so your trayliner will look better if it's printed on both sides.

DVD Folders & Booklets
If you're packaging your DVD in a jewel box, you need to include a folder or booklet that slides in the front of the case. You can choose what size the folder or booklet should be, and how many colors you want to use.

All standard MMS folders and booklets are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved papers, which means they come from responsibly logged forests. You can also choose from a wide range of 100% recycled papers for your project. Ask your rep for details. Click here for information about the MMS Green CD Program

A folder is just that - folded, with no staples. A booklet is a mini-book, stapled together.

4+4 folder

4+4 means your booklet or folder will be four-color on all sides.

4+1 means your booklet will be four-color on the outside, and one color (black) on all the inside pages. Your folder will be four-color on the outside, and one color (black) on the other side.

Visit the Templates page to see diagrams and templates of the many different folder/booklet styles we offer.

DVD Trayliners
If you're packaging your DVD in a jewel box, you need a trayliner that slides into the back of the jewel box. This is usually the place you find the DVD tracklisting. You need to choose what type of trayliner you would like:

4+4 trayliner

A 4+0 trayliner is printed in color on one side, with nothing on the other. Choose this one if you're using a black tray for your jewel box.

A 4+1 trayliner will show four colors when you look at the back of the DVD, and one color (black) when you look through the spine and underneath the DVD.

A 4+4 trayliner will show four colors when you look at the back of the DVD, and four colors when you look through the spine and underneath the DVD. Choose this one or the 4+1 trayliner if you're using a clear tray for your jewel box.

Visit the Templates page to see diagrams and templates of trayliners.

How many folders/booklets and trayliners should I make?
If you're packaging your DVD in a jewel box, you need to decide how many folders/booklets & trayliners you need for your project. The folders or booklets are printed at the same time as the trayliners, so you will need the same quantity of each. We usually refer to the folders/booklets and trayliners altogether as "graphics".

Obviously, you will need at least as many graphics as DVDs, but if you think you might be doing another run of DVDs later, using the same graphics, you can sometimes save money by ordering more graphics upfront.

The minimum number of graphics you can order is 1,000.
